Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) was one of those North-American painters who travelled the Deserts of both Arizona and Mexico in search of light and colour. At the same time, he was attracted by former American peoples’ art forms which he contributed to spread and promote. While the Great Depression came along, he left aside his beautiful landscapes with those scorched sunburnt rocks to depict the dramatic lives of those roaming all over the country, escaping poverty, uprooted. Apart from his country, the United States of America, this artist is little known. Anyway, we know that he used to paint dressed as a cowboy.

Hammershoi

The Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916) is one of my favourite painters. His sensitivity, his lighting technique, his sense of intimacy. He is mostly known because of his indoor scenes, sometimes with a certain symbolism but when he paints outer sceneries such as a church or a façade, he is again perfectly recognizable because of a quiet, still atmosphere. Hammershoi and those rooms where a woman, dressed in black most of the time, is looking thrown a window, or reading or sewing; those un-inhabited stays in gloom or bathed in light. He was very successful at life, then despised and now he is ‘in the spotlight’ again. Gwen John

I find that the Welsh painter Gwen John (1876-1939) is one of the greatest heros in the history of Art. I found a little book a while ago about her life, her works and, from that moment on, I have been totally devoted to her and her female portraits. I need to point out Gwen John’s unshakeable faith, her seek of solitude, the way she painted with no major ambition, completely separate from any fashion art movement. So many times, she has served as a model for me. She had not got an easy life, she did not seek it either; even at the expense of her well-being she was devoted to her paintings.
