I went to Fundación Juan March to see the exhibition El principio Asia, devoted to influences of Eastern Art on the contemporary Spanish art, but more particularly to closely watch El río IV (River IV), a big format painting by Fernando Zobel (1924-1984). Throughout my life I have felt a constant admiration for a number of painters and Zobel is among these few ones. I have read so many times his short Diario de un cuadro (painting diary). His labour as patron and collector has deserved recognition everywhere, with his support for the building of the astonishing Museum in the Casas Colgadas de Cuenca (Cuenca – Spain), but at the same time, I somehow understand that his paintworks have been underestimated by aristocratic and conceptual circles. Wrecks Some time ago I was given the chance of achieving my very first painting related to sea (oil on canvas 32x46-cm) for the cover of the book “Buques españoles desaparecidos sin rastro” (Spanish ships missing with no hint), by Manuel Rodríguez Aguilar, published by Almena Ediciones in 2013. My good friend Manuel asked me to feature a very particular view of Yute steamer, gone missing after a storm by the end of the 1920 decade. I had to use a photograph whose quality was so really poor and carefully remake shapes and concrete details using some pictures of other similar freighters. A view from the stern with a quiet sea, Yute steamer is heading to its own fate with some threatening clouds in the background.

Small Format The XXXVI Certamen de Pequeño Formato (36th Contest of Small Format) was held from 1st to 28th December 2017 in the  Sala Primavera (Spring Hall) in the Junta Municipal de Arganzuela (Arganzuela’s Town Council) organized by the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors (AEPE). It included sections such as painting, watercolour, drawing, sculpture and engraving. One of our spiders’ paintings called “small gothic” was chosen by the jury to enter this contest. Usually there are so few contest devoted to small format. Little importance is attached to these tiny works although this is a distinguishing mark in the work of so many and relevant artists.
