The Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916) is one of my favourite painters. His sensitivity, his lighting technique, his sense of intimacy. He is mostly known because of his indoor scenes, sometimes with a certain symbolism but when he paints outer sceneries such as a church or a façade, he is again perfectly recognizable because of a quiet, still atmosphere. Hammershoi and those rooms where a woman, dressed in black most of the time, is looking thrown a window, or reading or sewing; those un-inhabited stays in gloom or bathed in light. He was very successful at life, then despised and now he is ‘in the spotlight’ again. I find that the Welsh painter Gwen John (1876-1939) is one of the greatest heros in the history of Art. I found a little book a while ago about her life, her works and, from that moment on, I have been totally devoted to her and her female portraits. I need to point out Gwen John’s unshakeable faith, her seek of solitude, the way she painted with no major ambition, completely separate from any fashion art movement. So many times, she has served as a model for me. She had not got an easy life, she did not seek it either; even at the expense of her well-being she was devoted to her paintings. Gunnar Widforss

Gunnar Widforss (1879-1934) was a Swedish artist who developed the well-known part of his paintwork in the United States. Proficient water-colourist, tireless traveller, he settled in California in 1921 and was entrusted painting a series of landscapes, he was asked to depict the National Park of Yosemite Valley first and then Yellowstone, which he travels long. Once there, he paints most of his watercolour and drawings, leading a lonely, adventurous life. He worked in many national American parks. The most complete and beautiful series of painting is the one devoted to the Grand Canyon, with spectacular rocky landscapes and changing or contrasted effects of light.
